New Delhi, Nov 28, : Pakistan has placed a complete ban upon travel from seven countries following the discovery of Omicron, a new coronavirus variant, Dawn reported.Dawn reported that Omicron was first discovered in South Africa.

Dawn also reported that a notification by the National Command and Operation Centre had been issued.
The notification stated that travel restrictions had been placed in place from six southern African countries: South Africa, Lesotho and Eswatini; Mozambique; Botswana; Namibia; and Hong Kong.

These countries were added by the NCOC to category C.This category includes nations from which people face restrictions and cannot travel to Pakistan without specific NCOC guidelines.It was created in response to the Omicron strain’s emergence in South Africa and its spread into adjoining regions.

Therefore, “a complete ban was placed on direct [and] inbound travel from these nations with immediate effect.”

Asad Umar, Federal Planning and Development Minister, had earlier announced the same via a tweet.

“Based on the emergence and spread of the new Covid variant, notification was issued [to] limit travel from 6 South African Countries and Hong Kong,” he stated, adding that it was even more urgent to immunize all eligible citizens aged 12 and over.

According to the NCOC’s notification the report stated that travel from seven countries to Pakistan would be permitted “on extreme emergencies” provided that travellers obtain the necessary exemptions and follow the required health and testing protocols.
