Chennai 10 August, Chennai : Kuruvai farmers of Mayladuthurai and other coastal districts of Tamil Nadu are worried that their crops could be destroyed if the power subsidy that is currently being offered is removed in the wake of the Central Electricity (Amendment ) Bill 2022 that was introduced in the Parliament.
We are primarily dependent on groundwater pumps as the water sources we use for our farming, not water coming from the Cauvery river. Our crops are harvested between April and August and with groundwater as the primary source of our water needs and if the government decides to revoke the subsidy, then I worry that our crops could lose their value.
" According to the department of Agriculture of Tamil Nadu, more than 90 percent of the agriculture was dependent on borewell and groundwater and power is required. In an interview with IANS, K.R.Kannan a farmer told IANS, "We have been cultivating our Kuruvai crop from April to August , and Rabi from October through January. If the power supply is cut off and we are completely dependent on Cauvery water, which is only available in June.
This means that our crops will be destroyed in the days to come." It should be noted that the Union government has stated clearly that there will be no rules that would affect current agriculture subsidies.
The farmers also mentioned paddy is a crop that requires a consistent supply of water. If the subsidy for power is removed the farmers could be forced to cut off the Kuruvai crop and move toward the Rabi crop, which is dependent on the water supply of the river to irrigate.aal/uk .
