Sydney, Nov 26th : Australia’s new Test captain was Pat Cummins on Friday.This was a week after Tim Paine, the wicketkeeper-batsman, resigned involuntarily following the sexting scandal. Steve Smith, a former captain and batsman, has been named Cummins’ deputy ahead the Ashes series which begins at the Gabba in Brisbane on Dec 8.Cummins was previously vice-captain under Paine.
Cummins, 28, is the first specialist fast-bower to lead Australia’s men’s Test team since Ray Lindwall in 1956.The side was captained by Monty Noble and Jack Ryder, both medium-pace all-rounders.
“It is an honor to accept this role before what will be a huge Ashes season.”I hope I can provide the same leadership Tim Pierce has given the group over the past few years,” Cummins (the No.1 bowler in the ICC Test bowling rankings) was quoted by iccmedia.com as saying.
“With Steve and me as captains, a few very senior players in the squad and some great young talents coming through we are a strong, tightly knit group.This is an unexpected blessing which I am grateful for and look forward to.
Smith’s captaincy tenure ended in 2018 after the ball-tampering incident, also known as Sandpaper-gate scandal, in the away series against South Africa.He has been supported to take over the reins in the absence Cummins.
“Pat is a great player and leader.His attitude and achievements on and off the pitch have earned him immense respect from his teammates.” Cricket Australia (CA), chief Nick Hockley stated.
“We are very fortunate to have a group of senior players who are themselves exceptional leaders.I am certain that Pat and Steve will be supported in their leadership roles.”
Smith stated, “I am happy to return to the team’s leadership and look forward to supporting Pat in any way that I can.” Pat and I have been playing together for a while so we are familiar with each other’s styles.
“We are also great friends.The whole group is.We want to be a positive team and play good cricket.We also want to enjoy each other’s company.
Smith said that there are exciting times ahead, as we continue to focus on the Ashes.
Cummins will begin December 8th as Test captain, and will lead the side in the Ashes.
