More than 300 Tanzanians will climb Mt Kilimanjaro in celebration of the 60th I-Day

Dodoma : , Nov 22, 2012 – More than 300 Tanzanians will climb Mount Kilimanjaro to commemorate the 60th Independence Day of the country on December 9.This summit is the highest mountain in Africa, and also the tallest standing mountain in the world.
Mount Kilimanjaro is Tanzania’s most popular tourist destination.It rises to 5,895m above the sea level.Around 50,000 people attempt the climb each year, according to Xinhua news agency.

Damas Ndumbaro (Minister for Natural Resources and Tourism) stated that 121 climbers had registered so far for the historic expedition titled, “The Kilimanjaro Climb Camp”.

On December 9, 1961, Tanzania was granted independence by the British.

Ndumbaro said that the climb was jointly organized by Zara Tours, a private operator based in Moshi at the foot the mountain.

Mount Kilimanjaro is a dormant volcano and the fourth highest topographically significant peak on Earth.

This is part of Kilimanjaro National Park, and it is a popular climbing spot.
