To combat vehicular pollution, Delhi has over 1,700 impounded vehicles

New Delhi, Dec 8, 2008 : The Delhi government has taken possession of 1,754 vehicles to curb vehicular pollution.This includes diesel cars older than ten and petrol cars older than 15 years.
The data were shared in an Action Taken Report (ATR), prepared by the Department of Environment & Forest.It showed the figure from November 17 to December 6.

749 vehicle owners were fined, while 1,417 were prosecuted.

The National Green Tribunal (NGT), in 2015, and the Supreme Court in 2018, said that any registered diesel vehicle older than 10 years and any petrol vehicle older than 15 years cannot be operated in the National Capital Region.

The Delhi Transport Minister Kailash Gahlot announced on November 18 that a vehicle retrofitted with an electric kit can continue to drive on the roads of the capital for 10 years.This is a huge relief for diesel vehicle owners older than 10 years.

During the same time, 7,79,304 vehicles that were visible polluting and those without Pollution Under Control Certificates have been inspected.21,449 vehicles were inspected, 7,168 closed, and 21,679 owners were prosecuted.

According to the Centre for Science and Environment, vehicular emissions are the most significant contributor to Delhi’s PM2.5 levels.

To ensure traffic flow and avoid congestion, 27,038 intersections were monitored.

To keep an eye on industrial pollution, 1,432 industries were examined.10 of them were closed, while 10 others were fined for using unapproved fuels.

The report also stated that all industries inspected had switched to Piped Natural Gas, (PNG), where connectivity is available.

According to CSE, between October 24th and November 8th, this year, 9.9-13.7 percent of national capital air was contributed by industries.
