Lucknow, December 1, 2008 : The World Health Organisation’s Global Young Tobacco Survey found that three out of every three students in Uttar Pradesh are addicted to tobacco.The survey revealed that 37% of students smoke in their own homes, while 19.8% do it at a friend’s house.
The friend’s spot is clearly the preferred smoking area for nearly 20% of teenagers in the state.
According to the report, 13.5 percent of respondents reported that they smoke at school, 10.8 percent at public places, 8.9% at social events, and 9.7 percent at random places.
Global Youth Tobacco Survey (GYTS), a report on tobacco use among students, shows that 23 percent of Uttar Pradesh’s students, 22% boys and 24% girls, smoke tobacco in some form.
GYTS is a cross-sectional, nationally representative, school-based survey that surveys students aged 13-15 years.It uses a global standardised methodology and has a probability proportional with the enrolment.
The survey questionnaire addresses tobacco use, cessation, and other aspects.
