Omicron: Zimbabwe to ban the unvaxxed use of public transport

Harare, Dec 8, 2008 : Zimbabwe’s government expressed concern over the rising number of Covid-19 cases due to the Omicron variant.It plans to ban the unvaccinated passengers from boarding public transport.
“Cabinet is concerned by the sharp increase in the average number of new cases per day over the past two weeks,” Information Minister Monica Mutsvangwa stated at a Tuesday post-cabinet media briefing.She said that the government would intensify vaccination and tighten controls to stop the spread of the virus.

The number of daily Covid cases has risen exponentially in the past week, from 40 on November 28th to 2,555 Monday, according to Xinhua news agency.

Mutsvangwa stated that the government will set up vaccination stations at major bus terminals in the intra- and inter-city areas to ensure that all passengers are vaccinated before they board.

She said that eventually, those without a valid vaccine card will be unable to board public transport.She also stated that the ministries of education and health will continue to work together on the vaccination of the 16-17-year-old age group in schools.

Official data showed that the country’s total Covid-19 cases were at 141,601 as of Monday.There had been 128,966 recoveries, and there had been 4,713 deaths.

A total of 3,882,255 people received their first jab, and 2,892,366 received their second.Zimbabwe hopes to inoculate 60% of its population by the end of the year.

The government has made it mandatory that all visitors and residents returning to the country must undergo PCR testing.

The curfew hours have been extended to 9 p.m.to 6.During the day, no alcohol can be purchased at bottle shops.Nightclubs and bars are only allowed to accept vaccinated clients.
