Omicron variant reminds us that Covid is far from over: WHO

Geneva, Nov 29, : The Covid-19 pandemic that claimed more than 5,000,000 lives so far is still ongoing, even though the world is in its third year.
Tedros Adhanom, WHO Director General, stated at the Special Session that the world is still in the grip of “the worst acute health crisis in a century”, even though it can be prevented and detected and treated.

“The emergence and spread of the Omicron variant, a highly-mutated Omicron variant, highlights just how dangerous and precarious our current situation is.

“We don’t need another wake up call.We should all be alert to the threat of this virus.

Ghebreyesus stated that Omicron’s emergence is yet another reminder that, although many people might believe they are done with Covid-19 it is not.

He also advocated for a global treaty to combat future pandemics.

“Our current system discourages countries from alerting other countries to threats that will inevitably land at their shores.

Ghebreyesus stated that Omicron is an example of why the world needs a new agreement on pandemics.

He stated that Covid had exposed and exacerbated fundamental flaws in the global pandemic response architecture.

These include fragmented and complex governance, insufficient financing, and insufficient tools and systems.

“A legally binding agreement between countries is the best way to deal with future pandemics; an agreement that is forged from the realization that we have no future but one common future.

It will allow nations to come together to find common ground and make sustainable progress against common threats.

Ghebreyesus says that the pandemic will not end unless the vaccine crisis can be solved.

G20 countries have received more than 80 percent of vaccines in the world, while low-income countries (mostly in Africa) have received only 0.6% of vaccines.

The WHO chief called on its Member Countries to support the targets of vaccinating 40% of the population by the end of this calendar year and 70% by the middle next year.

Ghebreyesus stated that the longer vaccine inequity continues, the greater chance this virus will spread and evolve in ways we can’t predict or prevent.
