According to the department, there were approximately 40 to 70 vaccines per person in a Primary Health Centre on an average.

However, after the Omicron scare, it has increased to 120-140 per day on an average. This is almost three times.

Rajalakshmi Venlayudhan, a nurse at a Primary health center in Madurai, said to IANS, “People were lethargic and not too willing to get vaccinated after the second wave.” This had resulted in a decrease in vaccination rates in rural areas of the state. Now, we see that people are coming forward to vaccinate. In my area, a lot have already enquired about the booster dose and the second dose. This is a good sign.

Soudamini Ramakrishnan is a health nurse at Pammal, Chengalpattu, and she spoke to IANS to say that people are now willing to visit the PHC’s to inquire about the jab and whether the government will announce a booster dose for those who have already received the second dose.

These are positive signs, and I can attest that many who came to the PHC earlier turned their backs on the second dose after we pleaded with them.

According to health workers, there has been an increase in awareness because the media (radio, television, and print) are full of stories about Omicron variant, so people know that they need to be vaccinated.

Dr.Prabhdeep Kur, Deputy Director, National Institute of Epidemiology, spoke to IANS, saying, “It’s very important that the second dose of vaccine be taken even though studies are ongoing on the potential impact of Omicron variation.” These vaccines are the best to prevent such attacks.

Dr.

Rajani Varrier is an Epidemiologist at a leading Medical College Madurai. He told IANS that although viruses can change their nature, the core structure of the virus that causes respiratory diseases remains the same.

Vaccinations are effective in preventing the Omicron attack, but it can be milder for those who have been vaccinated.
