The Health Index Reports aim to encourage states and territories to improve their health system and service delivery.MOHFW has decided to link the Health Index with incentives in support of National Health Mission to emphasize the importance and value of this tool.

This report aims to change the emphasis from inputs and outputs on budget spending to results. The Health Index can be used to compare and measure the overall and incremental performance of states and territories across time.

It is also useful in understanding variations in performance across different parameters, including governance, data integrity and health outcomes. This has helped to strengthen the culture of using data at the state- and union territory-level to track performance.

It is also contributing to the agenda to improve the accessibility, quality and timeliness data in many states and union territories. The statement said that the annual performance for the states and the union territories is monitored by the government through the use of this report.
