New York, Dec 8, 2008 : The news about the expansion of Covid-19’s mandate to the private sector in New York City was widely reported and some were critical of its possible impact on employment.
New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio announced Monday that Covid-19 vaccine mandate would also apply to workers in the private sector, Xinhua news agency reported.

According to de Blasio, the mandate would be in effect from December 27 and will apply to approximately 184,000 businesses.

De Blasio stated that the specific rules would be published on December 15, and that the mandate would only apply to in-person employees without any option for weekly testing.

“In The Bronx with 15% unemployment, 28 percent of residents won’t be able to get work on December 27th, including 44% of Black young adults as a result de Blasio’s vaccine mandate for private sector,” stated Joe Borelli, Staten Island Councilman, and the incoming Republican minority leader on his Twitter account.

“There are 62,000 small businesses alone in Brooklyn.

It creates problems between employers and employees, which could lead to layoffs around holidays that would be incredibly tragic,” Randy Peters, president of Brooklyn Chamber of Commerce.

Kathryn Wylde, president of Partnership for New York City, stated that the timing of the announcement by the mayor and the failure of consulting with the business community makes a very nervous and bad situation worse.

De Blasio also announced the requirement that children aged 5-11 years old show proof of vaccination before they can eat indoors, exercise, or perform in performance venues, or before they are allowed to participate in high-risk extracurricular activities such as dance, band, orchestra, and music. This will take effect from December 14.

New York City’s seven-day average number of Covid cases increased to 1,975 Monday, compared to less than 1,000 at the beginning of November.

After serving two terms as New York City mayor, de Blasio was born in 1961.
