N. Korea insists on the need to increase military capability amid “growing instability”

Seoul, January 1, : , North Korean officials noted the “growing instability” of the military situation at the peninsula and stressed the need to boost the country’s defense capability.This was evident as the Workers’ Party held a large plenary earlier in the week according to Pyongyang state media.
The continued development and improvement of weapons systems was emphasized by the participants at the four-day Fourth Plenary Meeting of the 8th Central Committee, which concluded Friday in Pyongyang.The session was attended by Kim Jong Un, the leader of the party.

Yonhap, citing Korean Central Broadcasting Station reported that “The increasing instability of the military situation in the Korean Peninsula’s military and international situations are requiring us to push forward more strongly with strengthening national defense capabilities without any hitch.”

Although the North stated that it had reviewed important policy direction for inter-Korean relationships and foreign affairs as a response to rapidly-changing international political circumstances, they did not provide further information.

It stated that the defense industry must achieve the goals of modernisation, scientification.and the implementation of a plan for qualitatively changing the country’s defence capabilities.

The North reaffirmed the title of anti-virus programs as the “most important” national business during the session.This move was feared by Seoul to diminish its hopes for resuming dialogue and cross-border trades.

Since the beginning of Covid-19 Pyongyang has closed all borders and claimed to have no coronavirus.

The North announced a number of economic measures in order to improve the country’s agriculture sector, as part of its efforts to combat chronic food shortages.

According to estimates, the North has a deficit of around 1,000,000 tons per year.The coronavirus-driven lockdown at its border is believed to have had an impact on North Korea’s already poor food quality.
