New Delhi : , Nov 21, 2001 – Contrary to the opinion of pundits in the immediate aftermath to his announcement on November 19, that all three farm laws would be repealed, Prime Minister NarendraModis’ image and political capital did not appear to have been damaged.A snap poll by IANS-CVoter across India revealed this fact just hours after Modi announced the repeal. Over 52 percent of respondents believed that the Prime Minister made the right decision.Given that some analysts believe the farm laws are bad from their inception, this is not surprising.Their repeal would be welcomed.
In fact, over 50% of respondents claimed that farm laws are beneficial to farmers.However, 30.6 percent said they weren’t.
Another revelation from the poll can be comforting for Modi’s regime.Only 40.7 percent of respondents gave credit for repealing the farm laws to the government, and only 22.4 percent gave credit the opposition parties.A healthy 37% gave credit the protesters.
The most significant metric that emerged from this survey is the opinion of ordinary Indians about Modi’s treatment of farmers.The overwhelming majority (58.6%) of respondents believed Modi to be pro-farmer.Only 29% thought he was against farmers.
It is even more surprising that more than 50% of the opposition voters believe Modi to be pro-farmer.
Respondents were also asked to explain the motivations for the long and contentious agitation to repeal the farm laws.A large majority (56.7%) believed that the movement was political motivated in an attempt to undermine the Modi-led NDA government.Only 35% of respondents disagreed.
According to the data from polls after repealing farm laws, it seems that those who celebrate the political emasculation may have to hold off until they open their champagne bottles.
