Seoul, Nov 26th : , South Korean President Moon Jaein appointed Friday two deputy directors to the National Intelligence Service. According to Yonhap News Agency, Moon appointed Park Sun-won (head of the NIS’s planning and coordination office), as the first deputy director.
Chun Se-young was chosen as the second deputy director.
The first deputy director is responsible for gleaning intelligence about North Korea and other overseas affairs.
The second deputy director is responsible for espionage, terrorism, and counterintelligence.
The office stated in a statement that Park is an expert on North Korea and international politics.
Chun, however, is a long-standing intelligence official with expertise counter-espionage.
Moon stated that it will ensure the NIS is an intelligence agency and shield it from politics.
