A day after suffering humiliating defeats in four states -- Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh and Delhi -- the Congress party retained power in Mizoram, sweeping 33 of the 40 constituencies and leaving the opposition badly bruised with six seats The party won majority seats in Mizoram in which counting took place yesterday.
The ruling Congress bagged 33 seats while the main opposition Mizo National Front (MNF), which led the three-party coalition Mizoram Democratic Alliance (MDA), secured only five seats.
Another MDA partner Mizoram Peoples Conference (MPC) managed only one seat.So, finally the assembly elections tally will remain at 4-1 with BJP taking home the advantage to upcoming General elections.
This is for the sixth time that the Congress has come to power in the northeastern state which has its borders with Myanmar and Bangladesh It is also noted that BJP has no base in the North Eastern State.In 2008, Congress won Mizoram throne by bagging 32 seats.
So, this will be the second consecutive term.However, Congress party is in no mood to celebrate the victory.
