Maha Speaker election: MVA, Governor on collision course

Mumbai, December 27, : Maharashtras Mahavikas Aghadi government headed by Chief Minister Uddhav Thckeray was again seen at odds with Governor Bhagat Singh Kushyari - this time over the question of elections to the position of Assembly Speaker.

MVA leaders claim that the Governor has not yet responded to their requests.This is despite the fact that the Government will conduct the polls Tuesday, the last day of the Winter Session.

Officially, MVA leaders suggest that Governor may not be interested in the proposal but will seek legal advice before making a decision.Chandrakant Patil, President of Opposition Bharatiya Janata Party in state, warned that this issue could result in President Rule being imposed in the state.

Nana Patole, the president of the state Congress said in a similar vein that she believes the decision to use voice vote to elect the members is constitutional and plans to have the election on Tuesday.The legislature is empowered to modify the rules.

Accordingly, the rules to conduct the election for the position of Speaker were modified.This process follows the same pattern as in the Lok Sabha or other states.

Patole accused BJP opposition of pursuing its secret agenda, creating hurdles for MVA government governments by keeping Governor at the front.Three letters were sent by the MVA to Governor.

The first was on Friday followed by the second, which was handed by three ministerial delegations and then the third on Monday.Koshyari asked for details about the changes to the legislative rules at the Sunday meeting and promised he would get more information, consult legal professionals before deciding by today.

After Patoles resignation as President of the state party, this post was vacant for two years.The position had been held by Narhari Zirwal, Deputy Speaker.
