Maha has GST dues maximum pending with Centre. Congress says’stepmom’ treatment

Mumbai, Nov 29, : Maharashtra, the country that contributes the most to the Centres GST kitty has the maximum outstanding amount for the Covid-19 pandemic in the past two years, according to a RTI response.

Sachin Sawant, General Secretary of the State Congress, stated that the RTI response has confirmed what Maha Vikas Aghadi government had been saying for years - that the Bharatiya Janata Party Centre is giving Maharashtra a "step-motherly" treatment.According to RTI response, Maharashtra was the largest beneficiary of the GST compensation of Rs 277 752 crore due to states between April 2020 and March 2021.It received Rs 40,398 crore.This amount left the state with Rs 21,697.65 crore and Rs 11,977.35 crore in cess proceeds.Similar to the above, Maharashtra was responsible for Rs 15,060 crore of the total GST compensation due to states for the period of April 2021-July 20,21.This amount was derived from a back-to-back loan of Rs 13,782.36 crore and Rs 1,278 crore are still outstanding to the state.Maharashtras debts totalled Rs 50,374.68 crore between April 2019 and November 2021.It received Rs 11,111.15 cr and Rs 13,782.30 cr back to back loans, leaving a shortfall at Rs 25,481.23 crore.The MVA government has been persistently pleading with Centre to release its GST dues for the past two years.

Chief Minister Uddhav Thckeray had sent a letter to Nirmala Sitharaman, Union Finance Minister, on the same subject in December 2019, one month after assuming office.Thackeray met with the PM in June to discuss the issue.

Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Panwar and Congress also raised the matter with Centre staff on multiple occasions.Leaders of the ruling Shiv Sena Nationalist Congress Party-Congress, including NCP President Sharad Pwar, have repeatedly demanded that the Centre release the states GST dues to enable it to effectively address the Covid-19 pandemic.

Thackeray had in September 2020 criticized the Centre for failing to pay its GST dues and forcing it to take loans.A month later, he demanded that the Centre revert to the old system if the GST system had failed.
