Kanpur (UP), Nov 29, : A leopard adult was captured on CCTV while walking in Kanpur’s campus of Vikramajit Singh Sanatan Dharma (VSSD). After sharing the CCTV footage from Saturday night with the district administration, the Forest Department was able to take action.
People were notified and asked to not panic.
The college is located in the densely populated Nawabganj neighborhood of the city.
This is the first time that a wild animal has entered a residential area.
Arvind Yadav, Divisional Forest Officer, stated that traps were set to capture the leopard and baits were placed.
“Our teams are combing the area.We are certain to capture it sooner or later.He said that leopards are usually shy and won’t attack if they are disturbed.”
He said that the forest department had been granted permission to tranquilize the wild cat, and that teams from the department were working to trap it or tranquilize it.
Mohammad Nasir, Kanpur Zoo doctor, said that the leopard is an adult and has been around for 5-6 years.It is most likely a female.
He also said that he found a carcass from a dog in the same area, which suggests that the leopard preyed upon the dog.
“Leopards hunt at night and only then do they leave their hideout.It seems we will be able to capture the animal during the night.It had also eaten a dog, and several other dogs in the area were also gone.
The leopard apparently took the dogs that were missing.He also said that the leopard would have been hiding in this area for some time and would have hunted dogs.”
