Khurshid, Nur Jahan and Suraiya were prominent singers during that period.Lata started her career as a singer in 1947 with the film Mazboor.

Khurshid and Nur Jahans emigration to Pakistan during the Partition period helped her to reach higher peaks as a singer due to the growing importance of background music.Music director Ghulam Haider gave Lata a chance to be a singer.C.Ramachandra Latas song is sung all over the Himalayan peaks.The songs in Albela, Chhatrapati Shivaji and Anarkali were amazing successes.

Later songs from Andaz, Buddy Bahan, Barsaat, Awara, Shree 420, Dulari made her a top singer in Bollywood by 1966.Lata Mangeshkar produced the films Wadal in Marathi in 1953, Kanchan Ganga in 1954 and Jhunjhur and Lakin in Hindi.
