Los Angeles, Nov 29, : ‘Tango,’ a limited-event series that focuses on the turbulent events surrounding Bernardo Bertolucci’s 1972 erotic drama, ‘Last Tango in Paris,’ is in production at CBS Studios. Lisa Bruhlmann will co-direct the series with Jose Padilha and Greg Silverman of Stampede Ventures executive producing.CBS Studios will co-produce under its international first-look agreement with Stampede, with SVP of international co-productions and development Meghan Lyvers overseeing the project for the studio, reports hollywoodreporter.com.
Based on a script written by Daniel Cohn and Jeremy Miller, ‘Tango’ explores the 18 months preceding, during, and after the production of Last Tango in Paris.It also examines the story through the eyes of the three main characters — Marlon Brando, Maria Schneider, and Bertolucci.
“Last Tango In Paris” stars Schneider as a young woman who has an affair with a middle-aged American businessman.
This film has been a hot topic since its release.
The film grossed $36million at the time, which is equivalent to $186 million today.
It also garnered Oscar nominations from Bertolucci and Brando for their treatment Schneider, who were allegedly humiliated and exploited during filming and ridiculed afterwards for her role in the film.
The young actress was paid $4,000 for her role, but she said that the experience on set led to addiction and mental health problems.
In 2016, the controversy was rekindled by Bertolucci’s interview to Dutch TV in which he appeared to admit to exploiting Schneider.
Producers claim that the series ‘Tango’ will “explore questions about identity, fame, artistic ambition.” The series will be set in Italy, France, and the USA.Bertolucci will travel to Los Angeles in 1971 in order to convince Brando, a bankrupt and broken, to play a part in his film.It will show a graphic account about sexual obsession, emotional breakdown, and murder.
“When Jose and Stampede approached us, I was instantly drawn to the project and the opportunity to look closer at one the biggest scandals in our industry’s past – despite not being treated as such at that time,” stated Bruhlmann.”It’s really exciting to have the chance to dive into that world, into all these fascinating people, and especially to give Maria Schneider a voice.
“Tango” tells the story about two men who abuse a young, unexperienced woman not for sex but for the sake and art.The scene was captured on camera and became a major feature film that was praised by critics as well as audiences.Padilha said that the director and the actors enjoyed success while Maria’s pain was ignored.
