The Parliament was informed Monday that the higher Infant Mortality Ratio (IMR), among tribal communities, is due to a lack of awareness, inattention to institutional medical facilities and distinctive cultureHigher IMR and an increased number of cases in women with anaemia could not be due to high dropout rates, lack of education.

There may also be other factors like lack of awareness, not attending institutional medical facilities, unique culture, geographical isolation, backwardness.Minister of State for Tribal Affairs Bisheshwar Tidu addressed the Lok Sabha to answer a question about why infant and maternal mortality rates are high and cases of women with anaemia among tribal communities.

He said that the government has implemented the Tribal Sub-Plan, Schedule Tribe Component, and Development Action Plan for Development of STs (DAPSTs), to address the problem "Besides, Ministry of Tribal Affairs, 40 Central Ministries/Departments have been obligated by NITI Aayog for earmarking certain percentage of their total scheme allocation every year as TSP funds for tribal development.TSP funds can be spent by obligated Central Ministries and Departments under their schemes to fund various development projects related to education, health.agriculture, irrigation, roads.housing, drinking water.electrification, skill development, employment generation, etc.For the acceleration of socio-economic development in the country of Scheduled Tribes.TSP funds are also to be allocated by state governments in proportion to ST population (Census 2011, 2011) in the state relative to the total state plan.
