La Liga: Four lessons we learned from Spain’s Matchday 15.

Madrid, Nov 29, : Real Madrid has a four point lead at the top La Liga table after their narrow win at home against Sevilla on Sunday. This victory came after a weekend marred by poor refereeing. These are some of the things we learned in Spain this weekend.
1.Referees, VAR and other personnel must be improved
There were many bizarre refereeing decisions made throughout the weekend. It was almost impossible to understand why Gerard Pique’s clear sixth-minute handball against Villarreal was not considered a penalty.

The matchday referee may not have seen it clearly, but the VAR team must have because Pique’s arm blocking the goal-bound shot was obvious to anyone who was watching it on TV.

Referee Mateu Lashoz made a terrible error when he disallowed a Real Sociedad goal following a ball strike to him in Sunday’s match against Espanyol.Mateu refused to play and disallowed the goal five second later. The ball didn’t change his possession after hitting him. This was a simple misreading of the rules.

Sanchez Martinez, the referee, failed to award a penalty to either side in Real Madrid’s win against Sevilla.

The one he denied Sevilla was perhaps more significant because it would have put the visitors ahead 2-1.

Officials must do better if La Liga claims to have the best league in the entire world.

2.Vinicius saves Real Madrid again
Vinicius Jr continues to build a reputation by scoring his ninth goal of this season, giving Real Madrid a crucial 2-1 win over Sevilla on Sunday night.

In the 87th minute, the winger stepped in and unleashed a furious shot.It looked like the game was headed for a draw.

This would have kept Sevilla in the title race.

After Rafa Mir’s opening goal, Real Madrid scored an equalizing goal.

The visitors were slightly ahead for about an hour in the Bernabeu.Madrid will happily accept gifts from players like Vinicius and Benzema.

3.Atletico gets on the front foot and scores goals
Atletico Madrid’s main problem this season is that, despite the attacking talent available for Diego Simeone’s, his ‘factory setting” seems to be defensive. He showed this by replacing forwards with midfielders during last Wednesda’s defeat to AC Milan in Champions League.

Sunday’s Atletico were held at 0-0 by a well-trained Cadiz. This left him with few options but to attack.

Atletico was able to end up with 4-1 winners in the following: Yannick Carrasco and Angel Correa, Thomas Lemar, Antoine Griezmann and Matheus Cunha. It’s hard to believe that they don’t do this more often.

4.Athletic Club: Worrying Signs
Athletic Club Bilbao has a problem scoring goals. This is partly due to the absence of a number 9 and partly because of a lack creativity in central midfield.

However, the Basque side has largely compensated for this by playing a solid defense.

This defense was breached twice by Granada in their 2-2 draw.

The worrying thing for Marcelino Garcia Toral, is that both goals could have been avoided. They were the result of mistakes and a lack conviction in the tackle.

Athletic must keep a clean sheet if you don’t score goals. They also have a visit to Real Madrid next Wednesday.
