New Delhi, Dec 8, 2008 : Union Rail Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw said Wednesday that the Kisan Rails were a boon to small farmers during and after the pandemic. Talavi Rangaiah, YSR Congress, said that this service is a game changer’ for small and famous producers of fruits and vegetables.
Responding to a question during Question Hour in Lok Sabha, Rail Minister also stated that 1,642 Kisan Rails are currently operational and that by introducing sleeper coaches into these rails, the damage has been substantially reduced.
The Minister stated that transport costs via Kisan Rail are still lower than those of a truck.
These are goods trains, so farmers are not allowed on these trains.
Responding to Sanghmitra Maurya, a BJP Member,’s question about a Kisan train starting from Badaun, Uttar Pradesh, Viashnaw said that if goods bookings are good, the Ministry would definitely consider the idea of starting a new Kisan railway from Badaun.
He also informed the House about the use of air-conditioned containers for perishable goods such as vegetables and fruits.The government also provides a 50% subsidy for freight for perishable items.
Special tankers are used to transport milk, according to the Minister.
The Union Budget of 2020-21 announced the provision of the Kisan Rail.
This was launched in September for perishable items.Kisan Rail transformed small stations into major farm produce loading hubs.
It also benefited marginal and small farmers by preventing them from being stopped at smaller stations.Stations like Sangola and Jeur, Rahuri Kopargaon, Yeola and Niphad are now major fruit-and vegetable loading hubs.
Indian Railways runs the Kisan Rail services to transport perishables as well as agri-products, including milk, meats, fish, fruits and vegetables, and dairy products.Kisan Rail trains transport main crops and farm-produce from small villages to large cities.
The farmers are now getting a better price than local sales.
