Police in Kerala to take tough action against gawking wage-seekers

Thiruvananthapuram : , On Saturday, Anil Kant, chief of Kerala police issued directives to all district police chiefs requesting them to register FIRs regarding complaints of ‘gawking wage’ or ‘nokukooli’.
After the High Court intervened to end the practice of headload workers demanding wages for heavy-duty work done by cranes or other workers, Kant took the initiative.

Justice Devan Ramachandran, an angry judge, called for action against this “militancy” and called it “extortion” and demanded that the police act.

Justice Ramachandran had been tough last week and last month when he heard a petition from a Kollam hotel owner seeking police protection to unload materials using their own workers. He also blamed the state for not eradicating the practice.

Kant requested immediate action and a probe into a complaint.

Kant also stated that the charge-sheet must be submitted quickly under the relevant sections of extortion.

Although there are clear laws regarding loading and unloading materials at work sites, factories, and areas where residential units are constructed, at many places, local trade unions continue extorting money, even though they have not done the loading and unloading work.

A lot of people have sought protection from the police in recent years.

Interestingly, every time the issue has been raised, the government, especially the state Industries Minister P.Rajeev, and Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan, have promised to take strict action against those responsible.

These words seem to have no effect as victims must run to the court to obtain police protection to continue with their work.

However, Kant is issuing orders so we will have to wait to see how things develop.
