Kalpakkam N is to have wind profile radar by Data Patterns

By Venkatachari Jagannathan Chennai, Dec 8, : A wind profile radar will be installed at Kalpakkam’s nuclear island to collect continuous data on three-dimensional winds. This will allow for weather prediction as well as atmospheric dispersion modelling of radionuclide release in the event of very unlikely accidents.

Kalpakkam nuclear island is home to two 220-MW power units of Nuclear Power Corporation of India Ltd.(NPCIL), a 13-MW fastbreeder test reactor (FBTR), and a 30-KW mini reactor KAMINI.

Bharatiya Nabhikiya Vidyut Nigam Ltd is also building the 500-MW Prototype Fast Breeder Reactor at Kalpakkam (BHAVINI).

“The wind profiler is being installed in Kalpakkam DAE site to obtain continuous data about 3-dimensional winds in lower and middle tropospheres for site specific weather prediction, atmospheric dispersion modeling of radionuclide emissions in the event of extremely rare accidents,” an official from Indira Gandhi Centre of Atomic Research (IGCAR), told IANS preferring anonymity.

“An Online Nuclear Emergency Response System is (ONERS) was developed to provide guidance and support in the event nuclear/radiological emergencies.Official added that continuous wind profiles from wind profile radar are valuable inputs for Weather Prediction and Dispersion models.

According to the official, the data will also be useful for studying the turbulence, mesoscale circulations and convective phenomena surrounding this tropical site.

The wind profiler, which has a 20-year life span, will be installed in collaboration by the Radar Development Group, ISRO Telemetry Tracking and Command Network, (ISTRAC), of Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO).

“We will supply the wind profile radar as well as the C-band weather radar that will be installed at Kalpakkam. These orders were placed through ISRO’s ISTRAC,” S.Rangarajan (Chairman & Managing Director Data Patterns India) told IANS.

He stated that the total order value would be approximately Rs 15 crore.

Data Patterns has already built and supplied a wind profile radar to Cochin University of Science and Technology. This radar is the first 205MHz radar in the world.

Rangarajan said that the company won a contract worth Rs 380 crore from India’s Ministry of Defence for nine precision-approach radars for the Indian Navy, Indian Air Force and Indian Navy.

Data Patterns, a Mumbai-based defense and aerospace electronics company with a revenue of Rs 226 crore, has supplied a doppler radar for the National Institute of Ocean Technology and a C band weather radar to India Meteorological Department in Mumbai.

Rangarajan said that radars are classified under three broad categories: (i), surveillance radars (iii), weather radars and (iii).Tracking radars consisting of (a), IFF (identity friend/foe) Systems for defence services and (b), Missile Seekers-BrahMos as well as for flight path of ISRO Rockets.
