K-Rail Project Totally Against Kerala’s Interests: Sreedharan

Thiruvananthapuram : , Nov 23, : , Metroman E.Sreedharan stated Tuesday that the K-Rail project (Silver Line), as it stands, was completely against the public interest.
The statement was made here by Pinarayi Vijayan, a veteran engineer who lost the April 6 elections by a narrow margin, claiming that Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan had previously accused the UDF and BJP of preventing development work in the state, with special reference to the Silver Line Project. The same accusations were also made by Kodiyeri Balakrishanan, a leader of the CPI-M.

The alignment selected is incorrect. It runs parallel to existing railway lines from Tirur to Kasargod.Railways opposed the alignment because it could interfere with future quadrupling this stretch.140km runs through paddy fields which are unstable for high speed.

To preventtresspassing, high walls must be built on both sides of tracks. They will block free drainage and passage.

The equivalent to a China Wall would divide Kerala’s North and South. It is a stupid decision. This is a stupid decision. The Silver Line should not be in direct contact with the underground or elevated line.

There are no high-speed or semihigh speed lines anywhere in the world that have been planned for ground level.

The Railways have not approved the Silver Line’s technical parameters, including the gauge.

To complement their current line capacity, the Railways would like this line to operate as the third and fourth lines.Standard gauge is not able to do this.

To increase the Silver Line’s revenue, “RO-RO” services were planned during night hours. It is not feasible as maintenance requires night time hours.

The Silver Line has not had a final survey done at the site.It is unacceptable to finalize a railroad alignment using Google maps and Lidar surveys, especially when land acquisition is being done in a hurry.

There will be many changes after the final survey and the half of the land will have been lost.

He stated that there had been no traffic survey or geotechnical survey and also no environmental study nor social impact study.

Most of the DPRs prepared are based upon assumptions and hypotheses. It is not possible to verify the cost estimates, traffic projections or economics for this line.

Public domain is not possible for the contents of DPR.

The cost estimate was brutally suppressed on the ground that the line runs at grade.Public opposition to a High Speed Line being built at grade is strong. The public is not the only one who opposes the High Speed Line being built at grade.

This objection also includes railway experts, ecologists, and other ecology-minded people.

He said that more than 22,000 families would need to relocate in order to avoid possible displacements.

According to me, the Silver Line would cost more than Rs 110,000 cr upon completion and Rs 75,000 cr currently. This estimate was based upon the latest accepted rates for the Delhi Rapid Rail Transit System (RRTS), which can travel at a speed of 180 kmph.

The claim that Silver Line would be complete by 2025 was dismissed by him, stating it showed how ignorant and incompetent the agency responsible for the project.

It will take between 8 and 10 years to complete a project, even if you have the most efficient executing agency like DMRC.

Vijayan has this project as a pet.If completed, it will create a corridor of 529.45km connecting Thiruvananthapuram and Kasaragod.

This stretch can be covered in four hours by a semi-high speed train at 200km per hour.

These trains will cover the busy Thiruvananthapuram-Ernakulam stretch in 90 minutes, which at present takes more than four hours.

While the Silver Line will run parallel to Tirur’s existing rail line, a greener-field alignment was chosen for Tirur- Thiruvananthapuram.

Vijayan proposed this idea in his 2016-21 term. The Centre currently has it.
