This was reported to the Parliament on Tuesday.
In a written response to a question from Varun Gandhi (BJP), Nityanand Rai, Minister of State, Home Affairs, stated that drones and UAVs are used by the anti-national forces as surveillance and for smuggling arms, narcotics, and counterfeit Indian currency notes (FICN).

He said that it would help curb the threat of cattle smuggling, as many smugglers seek refuge in interior regions outside of the BSF’s jurisdiction.

These notifications were also placed on the Lok Sabha’s table on November 30, as per Section 139(3), the BSF Act 1968.

On November 11, the Ministry of Home Affairs extended the jurisdiction of BSF to 15km to 50km within the international border in Assam, West Bengal and Punjab by Government Notification (dated October 11, 2021).This was in addition to the reduction of 80 km to 50km inside the borders of Gujarat.

These decisions were criticized by the opposition-ruled countries, who deemed them an attempt to disrupt law and order in their state.

While the BJP-ruled States like Assam, Gujarat and West Bengal have passed resolutions in their Assemblies decrying the Centre’s decision, the BJP-ruled ones such as Gujarat and Assam welcomed it.
