England pulled out of the FIH Women’s World Cup for Junior Women in South Africa that began in December.The England team was scheduled to travel to South Africa this Sunday for the event that was to take place in Potchefstroom from December 5-16.
However, the United Kingdom government placed South Africa on the travel red list.This list carries significant restrictions and guidelines by the government as well as a quarantine period upon return to the UK.England Hockey stated Friday. The Junior Women’s World Cup in South Africa is in doubt.
There are reports that other European countries may also be considering withdrawing from this event due to the South African situation, where the new variant is more dangerous.
It will be difficult for the International Hockey Federation (FIH), to find a replacement England player.
There is not enough time for any country to prepare a team or send it for the event.
Hockey India is however continuing with its plans.
The Indian government has not yet banned South African travel, but advised states to screen and test international travelers from South Africa and other countries “at-risk” to avoid a new Coronavirus variant.
England was placed in Pool B with Canada, Brazil, and Uruguay in the 16-team tournament.
England Hockey’s Chief Executive Announced the team’s withdrawal.Nick Pink stated: “We understand the government’s decision and we respect it.Of course, we would never take risks with the health or wellbeing of our travelling team, so unfortunately, our hands are tied.”
England pulled out of the Junior Men’s World Cup at Bhubaneswar earlier due to the spread of Covid-19 India.
