Tokyo, November 22, : , Japan’s East Japan Railway Co.launched Monday “office cars” aboard Shinkansen bullet train lines linking Tokyo with the northern and central regions of the country to address the increasing demand for telework in the midst of the Covid-19 pandemic. The new service is free and allows passengers to use the internet from their seat, Xinhua reported.
On Monday, media were allowed to enter a Hokuriku bullet train.
A JR East employee demonstrated remotely how she uses noise-cancelling headphones.
The “smart glasses” will allow passengers to project their laptop content in front of them.
Bullet trains traveling on the Tohoku Line can also use small dividers for their seats.
The workspaces are not available weekends or on public holidays to avoid congestion.
JR East believes the service will allow people to travel online and work remotely.It also hopes to stimulate business travel demand, which has declined due to the pandemic.
Central Japan Railway Co., and West Japan Railway Co.are also testing the use of workspaces onboard trains running through major cities since October.
