Tokyo, Nov 30, : Japan has confirmed that it has identified the first case Omicron variant Covid-19, the Japanese government announced Tuesday. A man in his 30s who arrived from Namibia infected by Covid.
He was tested positive at Narita airport near Tokyo after his Sunday arrival.
Fumio Kishida, the Japanese Prime Minister, stated Monday that the government will ban all foreign nationals from entering Japan.
He also promised to quickly address concerns about the Omicron variant, Xinhua reported.
The measure was implemented on Tuesday and will continue for approximately one month.
It requires citizens and foreigners with resident status returning from high-risk areas to quarantine for up to 10 days in a government-designated facility.
South Africa reported the Omicron variant to the World Health Organisation (WHO), for the first time last week.
Several European countries have confirmed the infection, as well as countries and areas such as Australia, Canada and Israel.
The WHO has designated the strain with a high number of mutations as a “variant concern” and warned that it could be highly transmissible, increasing the risk of reinfection for people who have been previously infected by Covid.
