Rome 6 August : Italy is receiving assistance from France and Germany in dealing with the influx of migrants who cross the Mediterranean Sea from Africa, about two months after signing an European Union (EU) agreement on the distribution of migrants arriving by boat as well as by boat, the Interior Ministry in Rome said.
Italy as the first destination for migrants trying the dangerous crossing over the North African coast, has been calling for more aid from the different EU member states.Moreover, in June, the 21 members have agreed to a solidarity mechanism to assist the southern European members.
As of now thirteen member states have indicated their intention to absorb more than 8000 people, a spokeswoman from the European Commission said this week.Italian Interior Minister Luciana Lamorgese referred to an "historic step for the union".
The Italian authorities have recorded over 42,000 immigrants who have arrived via boat this year, far exceeding the previous year of approximately 30,000.If a centre-right-led political alliance prevails in the November 25 elections, as polls predict they have pledged to take more actions against migrants.
Matteo Salvini, head of the right-wing League (Lega) in the grouping on Friday, stated during a trip to the Italian island of Lampedusa off the Tunisian coast in Tunisia, that he would like to name an official special commissioner to stop the flow of migrants.Giorgia Meloni, the leader of the extremist right-wing Fratelli dItalia (Brothers of Italy) party that is ahead in the election, has said she will be a hostage for refugees in camps in North Africa.
