Fatorda (Goa), Nov 29, : Chennaiyin FC defeated NorthEast United FC, 2-1, in the 2021-22 Hero Indian Super League match (ISL) at the Jawaharlal Naehru Stadium in Fatorda.This match took place on Monday.Lallianzuala Chhangte (41’) broke the deadlock with a powerful strike from a defensive mistake, but VP Suhair (5o) made the most out of Chennaiyin’s goalkeeper being out-of-position to equalise.Anirudh Thapa, Chennaiyin FC’s captain, sealed the deal with a fine strike.Federico Gallego’s first season in the starting XI was the headline of team news, even before the whistle.
Mathias Coureur also returned to Khalid Jamil’s squad.
Narayan Das was given a new position at center-back by Chennaiyin’s Jerry Lalrinzuala.
Except for a moment when it appeared that LallianzualaChhangte had defeated Subhasish Roy Chowdhury, it was all NorthEast during the opening exchanges.
Gallego’s skill was evident as he repeatedly attacked the Chennaiyin defense.VP Suhair, Laldanmawia Raalte also had a few sniffs in opposition box to keep Highlanders on top.Gallego was injured again and couldn’t last 24 minutes.NorthEast United, who had already lost Deshorn Brown, had to bring in Pat Flottmann as an extra defender.
Both ends had their chances.Vishal Kaith saved Suhair’s head from a long throw in, and Hernan Santana made Hernan’s long-ranger just inches higher.
Chhangte, who had previously blazed over the line, made amends before halftime.Reagan Singh landed the ball in the box after a brilliant counter-press to the right.
After a mistimed intercept by Khassa Camara, Chhantge grabbed the ball and slotted it home.
Jamil made two adjustments after the break, and the results were immediately apparent.
Five minutes into the match, VP Suhair, a relatively unmarked player, was able to guide the ball past Vishal Kaith after a Provat Lakra long-throw.With more than 40 minutes remaining, NorthEast had scored the equaliser.
Lalkhawpuimawia shot wide, despite not having a net to aim at.Gurjinder Kumar’s long-ranger took a deflection from Slavko damjanovic and ricocheted off of the post.Kaith, a Mizoram-born striker, was once again out of position for the goal and failed to give his team the lead.
Mirlan Murzaev scored after the hour, but Rahim Ali’s through shot to the Kyrgyz was ruled offside.
Thapa, the new captain, was to have the final word in the game.Murzaev placed the ball in the middle of the field.
Chennaiyin FC’s Thapa ran at full speed to pass Camara, and then shot fiercely to regain the lead.
