New US sanctions condemned by Iran official amid nuclear talks

Tehran, December 8, 2008 : A senior Iranian official condemned the USs new sanctions against Iranian officials and governmental agencies.

"Even amid #ViennaTalks," Saeed Khatibzadeh wrote on Tuesday night on his personal Twitter account, reporting Xinhua news agency.

On Tuesday, the US Treasury Department announced that it would freeze assets and prohibit US citizens from doing business with agencies or individuals from other countries.This was due to alleged "repression of democracy" Washington has sanctioned special units of Irans Police, including its counter-terrorism force and two state prisons.

Khatibzadeh stated that the new sanctions will not improve Washingtons negotiating position during the process of revitalizing the 2015 nuclear agreement, also known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action, (JCPOA).The Vienna talks, which were restarted on Nov 29 to revive JCPOA following a long hiatus of months, will continue on Thursday.
