Tehran, December 8, 2008 : A senior Iranian official condemned the US’s new sanctions against Iranian officials and governmental agencies. “Even amid #ViennaTalks,” Saeed Khatibzadeh wrote on Tuesday night on his personal Twitter account, reporting Xinhua news agency.
On Tuesday, the US Treasury Department announced that it would freeze assets and prohibit US citizens from doing business with agencies or individuals from other countries.This was due to alleged “repression of democracy”
Washington has sanctioned special units of Iran’s Police, including its counter-terrorism force and two state prisons.
There are also a number of military commanders and officials.
The spokesman for the foreign ministry stated that the US “fails” to grasp that’maximum failures’ and diplomatic breakthroughs are mutually exclusive.
Khatibzadeh stated that the new sanctions will not improve Washington’s negotiating position during the process of revitalizing the 2015 nuclear agreement, also known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action, (JCPOA).
The Vienna talks, which were restarted on Nov 29 to revive JCPOA following a long hiatus of months, will continue on Thursday.
