India witnesses a return to populism, with strong demand legally guaranteed MSP

New Delhi 23 November : .Is India seeing the return to populism? There have been concerns about governments ability to purchase all food grains at legal guaranteed prices.

This worry was not shared by the snap poll respondents to an IANS CVoter survey.62.6 percent believed that government could afford legal guaranteed MSP payments for all crops.The majority of supporters of the opposition also supported this view.

In an IANS CVoter snap poll, respondents were asked whether they would support a demand similar to that made by farmers for legal guaranteed MSP on foods like eggs, milk, vegetables and chicken.Nearly 70% of respondents indicated that they would accept this request if presented.

This hypothetical request was supported by more than 63% of NDA supporters.IANS-CVoter carried out a quick poll in India to see what Indians thought about the demands of farm leaders.

A new law must be passed by Parliament to guarantee minimum support prices.The government currently provides MSP to 23 crops.

The demand for legal guaranteed MSP was supported by more than 61% of respondents, while only 21% were opposed.This demand was supported by a larger percentage of NDA voters than it was expected.
