IND vs NZ: Wickets are the best pain killer, says Southee, NZ pacer

Kanpur, Nov 26th : , New Zealand pacer Tim Southee said that taking wickets on Day Two of the Test against India was the best way to relieve the pain from the injury he sustained on the opening day.He was also happy to see openers Will Young (and Tom Latham) playing well with the bat, scoring a stand total of 129 runs.
Southee was New Zealand’s star on Day Two.He took four wickets on a slow pitch Friday to finish with figures of 5/69.This was his 13th five-wicket haul of Test cricket. This was a huge turnaround for Southee, who was forced to leave the field after suffering a groin injury in Day One’s second session.

“I felt something quite tight in my groin area, and was trying to ensure it wasn’t anything worse. It was very comforting to know that it wasn’t muscular. It was more on the tendon. You can expect some stiffness or soreness from playing a lot of cricket.I had a bit of physio last evening and was able, with some painkillers to, to play through some pain.”I think wickets are the best painkiller, so that kind of numbed my pain a bit this morning,” Southee said in the virtual press conference following Day Two.

Southee spoke out about the things that worked for him while he was running through the rest India’s batting order. He explained that it took varying lengths of planning and extensive planning.”Lengths can be unpredictable in different conditions. You need to quickly assess that.

With the new ball, I think that hitting this length this morning was crucial. We had to plan a lot for the series to find ways to get a batter out.Sometimes it was reversed. It’s about asking difficult questions for a long time.

The 32-year old credited his previous trips to the country for Friday’s success.”I believe every wicket you take is special. It is always nice to do well here, where spin plays an important role.It is always nice to be a seamer in such conditions.

I was lucky to have traveled to this region as a youngster, and I learned a lot from those experiences early in my career.

“The desire to improve each time you represent your country has helped.

Moreover, looking for new ways to learn and improve throughout the year has been a great help. The main skill is to swing with the new ball and train a lot with the older one to be a threat.

Also, I am always looking for ways to find wickets in subcontinent conditions that are so different from my home.

Southee was very pleased with how day two went.He also said that tourists will be looking forward to playing session by session Saturday.”It was a great day.We knew we needed to get the new ball in place early against two players who were well-set and playing well.It was great to get a few chances and take some wickets early in the day.It was a solid performance, especially after being asked to bowl first. Our openers have been outstanding and have played.

We are used to Tom Latham being the top of the order, but for Will You’g, who hasn’t played cricket since the World Test Championship final to play the way he did, it was amazing to watch.

“We won’t look ahead and will take each session one at a time.

Although it’s nice to be in this position, it’s also a lot of work.India are a good side and their bowlers are excellent in these conditions. We have to be at the top of our game tomorrow, and take it one by one.”
