Kanpur, Nov 26th : .A maiden Test century by ShreyasIyer and a five wicket haul by Tim Southee capped an enjoyable session at the Green Park Stadium here in Kanpur on Friday. India are 339/8 at lunch in 109 overs.Ravichandran Ashwin (38 runs off 54 balls) is at the crease.Umesh Yadav (4 runs off 28 balls) is at the crease.Iyer and Southee are the standout performers for each team.
Iyer resumed from 258/4 with two boundaries off Jamieson’s first over.Tim Southee broke the 121 run stand in his second over.
Jadeja clung on to his stumps with little feet movement, leaving without adding to his overnight score.
Iyer, however, was not perturbed and took another boundary by steering through Jamieson.
Jamieson was unable to stop Iyer, who managed to get boundaries through a thick edge between slips and wide gully fieldsers followed by an elegant cover drive.
Iyer scored his maiden Test century by scoring two runs through point from Jamieson in the 92nd Over.26-year-old Iyer became the 16th Indian batsman (10th at home), to score a century in Test debut.
He was also the second Indian batsman after Gundappa Viswanath, who scored a Test hundred in Kanpur against Australia in 1969.
Ravichandran Ashwin scored consecutive boundaries after Wriddhiman Sha was caught behind to wicketkeeper Tom Blundell of Southee in the93rd over.
Southee took his third wicket after the drinks break when Iyer hit a drive from the body to cover.
Southee finished his 13th Test cricket five-wicket run, scoring one to seam away Axar Patel.He was then poked behind by the keeper.
Ashwin continued his counter-attack by taking a boundary from Southee as well as Jamieson.Ashwin, Yadav and Southee ensured that India didn’t lose any more wickets before lunch.
India will be looking to extend its innings after lunch, with the ball remaining very low in odd instances.
