New Delhi, Dec 8, 2008 : Chief of Defence Staff General Bipin Rahat (63) was appointed to make the Indian military modern and able to deal with any security threats at the Northern or Western borders.
Rawat, his wife, and 11 others were killed in the accident.On January 1, 2020, General Rawat was appointed Indias first Chief Of Defence Staff.
The position was created to integrate three services -- Army Navy Air Force and Navy.The CDSs mission is to facilitate integration, maximize the use of resources and ensure uniformity in procurement.
General Rawat, as CDS, was also the Principal Military Adviser to the Defence Minister in all matters related to the tri-services.Later, he was appointed to the position of head of the newly created Department of Military Affairs.
He was appointed the 27th Chief Of The Army Staff by the government on December 17, 2016.After the retirement of General Dalbir Singh Suhag, he assumed control on December 31, 2016.
He assured the government that the Army Navy and Air Force would work together and that the CDS would ensure integration between the three forces.He was instrumental in ensuring optimal budget utilisation, bringing more synergy to procurement, training, and operations of services through joint planning, integration.
He was responsible for facilitating the indigenisation and maximum use of weapons and equipment, as well as formulating the overall defense acquisition plan for all three services.General Rawat, who was appointed Chief of Defence Staff in May 2005, promised to increase the synergy between the three services "The CDS was created to facilitate integration, make the most of resources available to the armed forces, and ensure uniformity in procurement procedures.
He said that the Army, Navy, and Air Force would work together and that the CDS would ensure integration.He was the Indian Army chief for three year before he was appointed as the CDS.He graduated from the National Defence Academy, Defence Services Staff College Wellington, and National Defence College.He also attended the Command and General Staff Course, Fort Leavenworth, USA.General Rawat served a distinguished career in the Army and commanded an infantry battalion in the Eastern Sector Line of Actual Control, a Rashtriya Rifles Sector and an infantry division within the Kashmir Valley.He also commanded a Corps in Northeast.
General Rawat also commanded the Multinational Brigade in Democratic Republic of Congo.He was an Army Commander and commanded a theatre along the Western Front.
He was then appointed Vice Chief of Army Staff, before becoming Chief of Army Staff.Over the 43-year period of his service in the Army, General Rawat was awarded numerous gallantry and distinguished services awards.
