Imran Khan warned against visiting Peshawar prior to local elections

New Delhi, Dec 8, 2008 : The Election Commission of Pakistan warned Imran Khan, Pakistan’s Prime Minister, against violating its code of conduct just hours before he launched a Peshawar-based health insurance program, Dawn reported.
During his day-long visit, Prime Minister Imran Khan launched “Micro Health Insurance Programme” in the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa capital.

The ECP addressed a letter to Pakistan’s premier referring to media reports on the PM’s planned visit to the provincial capital.It also reminded him about the November 4 notification of the commission, which detailed instructions for parties and contesting candidate ahead of the elections.

The ECP had established December 19 and January 16 respectively as the dates for the first phase of the provincial elections for local government.

The ECP stated in its letter that “After the issuance election schedule, the President and Prime Minister, Governors, Speaker, Speaker, Deputy Speaker or Chairman of any assembly Chairman, and Deputy Chairman or Senate, Federal and Province Ministers, Advisors and the Prime Minister or Chief minister shall not visit any area of any local Council to announce any development scheme, or to canvass for any candidate.”

The ECP advised Pakistan’s Prime Minister to not violate any provisions of the code of conduct or instructions issued by the electoral commission.It warned that legal proceedings under Section-233 (codes of conduct) and 234(monitoring election campaigns) of 2017 will be initiated against you.

Kamran Khan Bangash, the special assistant to the KP chief information minister, clarified that the premier was only visiting Peshawar for an official purpose.

According to the report, he stated that “it [the visit] is part of daily affairs in the state on which there’s no restriction.”
