New Delhi, November 18 : .Prime Minister Imran Khan had the opportunity to show his majority at Parliament’s joint session.
This he achieved. Express Tribune reports that the government swept through the session with the support of 221 votes from his party members as well as those of allies.
The opposition legislators tried to persuade the National Assembly Speaker AsadQaiser not to interrupt the session in order for both sides to sit down and discuss the agenda items.However, their hue and cry, sloganeering, surrounding Speaker’s desk, and tearing up the papers, heated arguments and heated exchanges ensued and the government continued with its legislative work and passed 33 bills.
According to the Pakistan Opposition, Prime Minister Imran Khan lost confidence among his fellow members as well as the support of the Senate and National Assembly allies.The report stated that he escaped this storm without difficulty.
The government lost two times in the National Assembly last week.It had to postpone the joint sittings of parliament for 24 hours after its summoning because the allies were separating themselves from it.
Opposition hoped that the government wouldn’t be able complete the numbers again and that the legislation to change the voting system would fail to be passed.They believed they could stop the government in the same way that they had a week earlier.
The opposition however found its seven members absent due to varying reasons, ranging from foreign visits or health concerns, after the vote count.
Although the Opposition was trying to be brave in front of the joint session, Wednesday fell on the shoulders of the Treasury.
All the bills required by the joint sitting were passed during the session.These include the two most important ones that deal with the holding of the next election via electronic voting machines, and the granting overseas Pakistanis voting rights in future elections.
