CNT is a partnership between academia and industry to address future challenges in nanotechnology.

Apart from equipment and building costs, the major financing for the Centre came from the Ministry of Education and Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology of the Union Government.

The facility will house 25 laboratories, which will be devoted to multidisciplinary and translational research.

It also has Class-100 clean rooms, as well as state-of the-art manufacturing, characterisation, and testing labs.

The CNT presently hosts two Centres-for-Excellence sponsored by (MeitY) and the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) along with an Incubator BioNEST sponsored by Biotechnology Industry Research Assistance Council (BIRAC), Department of Biotechnology, Central Government.

CNT represents a great example of cooperation among different ministries within the Central Government.

The Centre for Nanotechnology is expected to deliver the following key results: nano-enabled health, energy harvesting and prototypes and devices, incubation ecosystems, start-ups/incubation environment, high-end R&D outputs and capacity building for highly-skilled manpower in areas like nanofabrication, nanoelectronics and others.

The CIKS will be devoted to preserving and documenting the unique knowledge of India.Priorities include Indian classical music and Yoga, Sanskrit and traditional medicine, as well as temple architecture and ceramic traditions, and specific agricultural practices in North-East India.

Also, the CIKS will focus on Assam’s metalwork and herbs.

The new CIKS will encourage scholars from different backgrounds to take part in its interdisciplinary education and research programs.

This will allow them to develop practices and technology in diverse areas of sustainable growth and development.

Dharmendra Pradhan, Minister of Education, Skill Development and Entrepreneurship, visited IIT Guwahati on Sunday to inaugurate the CNT and CIKS, as well as the two hostels.

A book was also published by him on NEP 2020 implementation in the institute.

Pradhan spoke at the event and congratulated IIT Guwahati on achieving top rankings in international and national ranking system.

He also appreciated IIT Guwahati’s efforts to create an environment for education and research, as well as the focus on regional development.

He stated that IIT Guwahati must play an important part in disaster management, biodiversity research, green energy development and strengthening the knowledge-based economy.

He also encouraged students and faculty to work together to build a dynamic ecosystem for solution-centric innovation.

Pradhan stated that the IIT Guwahati centre for nanotechnology will be home to a variety of CoEs as well as incubators and research labs for multi-disciplinary education and research in areas such healthcare, energy and nano-biomaterials.

He also stated that in his 2020 convocation speech, Prime Minister Narendra Modi had recommended to IIT Guwahati the establishment of a Centre for Indian Knowledge System.

He was happy to see that the process has been completed quickly for sharing, documenting and preserving traditional Indian knowledge.

Pradhan stated that Srimant Snkardev was an outstanding scholar, who provided new ideas and shapes to civilisations and the human race.

He said that the IIT Guwahati students should be inspired by the Ahom culture and the Brahmaputra.

Innovation and technology were key to the success of COVID-19.They provided PPT kits and helped with the development and production vaccines.

This was a testament to the country’s resilience. He noted that institutes such as IIT Guwahati must play an important part in harnessing innovation for the benefit of society.

Pradhan stated that Modi presented the ‘Panchamrit vision to combat climate change’ during COP26.

He said, “Our northern states could become the center of green energy development.IIT Guwahati plays an important role.”

Ranoj Pegu, Assam Education Minister Ranoj said that IIT Guwahati should be congratulated and encourage entrepreneurship. He also stressed the importance of producing job creators rather than job seekers.

He suggested that institutes such as IIT Guwahati focus their efforts on the development of new technologies for agriculture to double the incomes of farmers.

Pegu also requested IIT Guwahati mentor the regional educational institutions and develop training modules for teachers.

Queen Oja, MP expressed happiness at the development of such research facilities in Northeast India and expected IIT Guwahati’s contribution to the overall development in this region.
