Dubai 26 December : .The International Cricket Council (ICC), on Sunday expressed its sorrow at the death of Ray Illingworth, former England captain.

Illingworth was undergoing radiotherapy to treat esophageal carcinoma.He died Saturday leaving behind a devastated cricket community.
Ray Illingworth, a great English cricket player and one of England’s greatest captains was an enormous figure.His contributions to cricket were immense, both as Engla’d’s Captain and as a coach and chair of selectors.

Geoff Allardice, Chief Executive of the ICC, said that our thoughts and prayers are with his loved ones during this time.

Illingworth was born in Pudsey in Yorkshire.

He was 19 years old when he started his professional career.In 1983, Illingworth hung his boots.

From 1958 to 1973 Illingworth was England’s representative.He played 61 Tests and scored 1836 runs.Also, he picked up 122 wickets.In 1970/71, he captained England to the famous victory of 2-0 Ashes in Australia.

His 32-year first-class career was remarkable.He scored 24,134 runs on an average run of 28.06, and took 2072 wickets on an average of 20.27.From 1966 to 1968, he led Yorkshire to three consecutive County Championship victories.

Illingworth retired and began a career in broadcasting.

He was also a contributor to BBC television coverage.Illingworth was also England’s coach 1995/96, and the chairman of selectors from 1994 to 1996.

Illingworth revealed in November 2021 that he was undergoing treatment for esophageal carcinoma.Shirley, his wife had died earlier this year from cancer.

On Sunday, the first day of the Ashes against Australia was played at the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG).
