By Troy RibeirThe Lost Daughter (Streaming On Netflix) Duration: 122 minutes.Director: Maggie Gyllenhaal.
Cast: Olivia Colman (Dakota Johnson), Jessie Buckley and Ed HarrisIANS Rating: 1/2 Based on Elena Ferrantes novel, "The Lost Daughter" by Maggie Gyllenhall is a riveting psychological drama about motherhood.Leda Caruso, Olivia Colman, is a professor who settles into her vacation on the imaginary island of Kyopeli.
A boisterous family arrives at the beach a few days after Leda Carusos vacation ends.Leda spots Nina (Dakota Johnson), the young mother and Elina, among the other members of her family.
Her focus on Nina and her struggle to cope with motherhood is way too intense.Leda sees them interconnect and recalls how they used to bond with Bianca, Martha, and Martha.
Leda becomes friends with Nina, and assumes a motherly role. But there is something wrong about the relationship. It is not clear why she behaves the way she does.Obsessive and compulsive. She fights her impulses.
This film is character driven and narrated in non-linear fashion.Ledas story unfolds like an intriguing page-turner.
It is filled with tension-filled scenes of the present and interspersed by scenes from Leda’s 20-year-old life. The younger Leda is exhausted and tired juggling her two young daughters and her job.Gyllenhaal reminds that we cannot escape the consequences of familial love. The emotional minefields she navigates are not easy for her.She also unflinchingly counts the psychological harm that has been caused to multiple generations of women. This makes it all relatable.
You may find some characters from the movie reminiscent of your own experiences.Jessie Buckley and Olivia Colman, playing the younger and older Leda Caruso respectively, have a chemistry that is second to none.
They bring Ledas watchful, distressed, sometimes impulsive, and sloppy mannerisms out with astonishing, natural ease and make it easy to feel sorry for her.Johnson portrays Nina, a young, troubled mother who is unsure what her life will hold.Johnsons performance is a captivating mix of taut despair and languid pleasure.
Dagmara Dominczyk is Ninas pregnant sister in law Callie. She is vibrant and sharp.
Ed Harris plays Lyle, Ledas lodge caretaker, Peter Sarsgaard is the celebrity scholar and Paul Mescal, Will the helpful boy at the resort. The film is mounted at moderate production values.
