Ian Chappell criticizes Cricket Australia for appointing Smith vice-captain

Sydney, Nov 27, : Australian cricket legend Ian Chappell has criticised Cricket Australias (CAs) decision to appoint Steve Smith vice-captain.

He said, "If they (CA), had cheated as an Australian captain," and that they would have made sure that he didnt play as a playerChappells comments put the spotlight on the ball-tampering incident that occurred during the third Test against South Africa in Newlands, Cape Town in 2018.

After the scandal, Smith, his deputy David Warner, and Cameron Bancroft, the Australian skipper, were all banned for different periods.This was later known as "Sandpapergate".Smith was suspended for one year.

Warner, the vice-captain at the time, was also banned for two years.Warner was also banned from leadership for life.

Chappell stated that "I wish Cricket Australia had made an immediate clean break." This probably meant that he would have to close the door on him for his entire life.Cheating is cheating.

It doesnt matter if its big or small cheating.I would have cheated as an Australian captain.

I made many mistakes, but I didnt cheat."And if I had cheated, and had I done what Tim Paine did -- I would have expected Cricket Australia not to ask me to quit and make sure I didn’t play as a player." Chappell said.
