Bhubaneswar, Nov 29, : , Four Indian junior hockey team captains, including Indias Vivek Sgar Prasad are currently participating in FIH Odisha Hockey Mens Junior World Cup, Bhubaneswar.They said that their experience playing ‘Hockey5s made them more determined on the field. Vivek Sagar Prasad (Argentina), Facundo Zarate, Gracjan Jarzynski, Poland, and Akhimullah Annuar (Malaysia), played Hockey5s at the Youth Olympic Games, which were held in 2018 in Buenos Aires.
Hockey5s is a format that involves 5 players per team.It is known for its non-stop, end-to-end action, higher average number of goals, and shorter match duration (2 x 10 min).
“I have very fond memories about the Youth Olympic Games 2018.
It was my first time at a multi-discipline event and I was overwhelmed upon arriving in Buenos Aires.I was also the team captain.
It was a great learning experience, but also very enjoyable.We ended up with the Silver medal.
It was undoubtedly one the most memorable tournaments of my formative hockey years,” Vivek Sagar Prasad, India’s captain, said.
Gracjan Jarzynski, Poland’s captain, recalled the Youth Games experience.
“The Youth Olympic Games in Buenos Aires was a great experience for me and my team.It was great to play against other teams like Malaysia, India, and Argentina.
We will be meeting again in Bhubaneswar — but on a larger pitch.He said that he believes that Hockey5s helped him to improve his hitting technique, elimination and defending skills.
“We have long understood the benefits of Hockey5s for countries where hockey is still in its early stages of growth.The smaller pitch size, simplified rules and fewer players make hockey more accessible to all ages.
The evidence that Hockey5s can play in elite hockey pathways of athletes in countries like India, Argentina and Malaysia, Canada and Poland is amazing.It also shows the crossover of skills between the full-size format and the shorter version,” said Jon Wyatt, FIH Sports Director.
FIH has established a FIH Hockey5s World Cup.The inaugural edition will be held in Oman in 2024.A Hockey5s World Tour will follow in the near future.The FIH Hockey5s Lausanne 2022 event will be held next year on 4-5 June.
It will include, among others, the men’s hockey teams from India, Malaysia, and Poland.
