Heavy rains lash Sri Lanka, 14 people dead

Colombo 26 Nov : , Fourteen people were killed, and one person was reported missing, as heavy rains and strong winds continue to batter Sri Lanka since last week.The Disaster Management Centre (DMC), said.
According to the DMC’s latest figures, more than 100,000 families were affected in the nine districts by adverse weather conditions, while 114 people were relocated to safer locations, reports Xinhua news agency.

The Centre also stated that 22 people were injured in rain-related incidents.

The Meteorology Department of Sri Lanka on Thursday announced that a red alert was issued for 19 districts due to heavy rains of more than 100 mm expected in 19 districts.

According to the Meteorology Department, the red alert was issued because of a low-level atmospheric disturbance that was affecting southeast Sri Lanka and the southwest Bay of Bengal.

This disturbance had turned into a low pressure disturbance and was currently located east of the country.

Weather conditions are expected to get worse over the next 24 hours.

However, the lower atmospheric disturbance is likely move northwestwards.

According to the DMC, people living in low-lying areas were advised to move inland.
