Heavy flash flooding in Afghanistan kills 178 people

Kabul 25 Aug, Kabul : Within the last one month, more than 178 people have died in the aftermath of massive flash floods in Afghanistan an official told.

In addition more than 3,000 homes were completely or partially damaged and thousands of acres of land was destroyed, and hundreds of livestock were killed according to the official "People require more help because theyve suffered huge human and financial losses.The people have suffered the loss of everything.

" Haqqani said The floods struck Afghanistan just two months after Afghanistan suffered one of its most destructive earthquakes in the last few decades.The seasonal flooding is common in Afghanistan however, it this year has been particularly heavy in recent weeks.

Flash floods often catch people off guard since theres no alarm systems in the mountainous region.The tens of years of conflict, along with the degradation of the environment and a lack of funding in mitigation of disaster risks, have contributed to the growing vulnerability of Afghans to natural disasters, according the UN.In the average, natural catastrophes touch around 200,000 people each year in the war-ravaged country.
