New Delhi, November 23, : , The Delhi High Court sought Tuesday the position of the Aam Aadmi party-led Delhi government in a petition for immediate closing of Jangpura’s proposed liquor store.This was due to its close proximity with schools, religious institutions and hospitals.
Justice Yashwant Vam asked Justice Yashwant Varm to give its position on the Arvind Kehriwal government’s plea by Parveen Arora, and other Jangpura residents who requested direction from the respondents for immediate action against this liquor shop.

The proposed wine- and beer store was in contravention of applicable laws, including the Delhi Excise Policy (2021-22).

According to the excise policy of the last year, wine and beer shops are not allowed within 100 meters of major religious and educational places and hospitals that have fifty or more beds.The plea was filed via Adv.Abhay Kumar noted that he sought the court’s direction in this matter to the respondents — the Government of NCT of Delhi and Commissioner (Excise Entertainment and Luxury Tax), and the Universal Wine and Beer Shop and its holder.

The Delhi Excise Policy was mentioned in the plea.

It states that retail vends may be opened at any market, mall, or commercial area, provided the rules and regulations are adhered to.This includes restrictions regarding vends being within certain distances of religious institutions, schools, etc.

The respondents allegedly granted the permission to open the Jangpura wine and beer shop contrary to law because temples, gurudwaras, hospitals and schools can be found within 100 meters of this location.

The plea stated that Arya Samaj Mandir, which has 5 schools, is located at 30 meters, Kanthi Mata Mandir at 60 metres, Mai Ka Gurudwara at 90 metres, and MCD hospital at 60 metres.

The report stated further that residents of Jangpura A and Bhogal had made complaints to Jangpura and Bhogal’s local Councilor.They convened an informal meeting to discuss various issues, including law and order, safety, children and the elderly.

They approached the court to take a final decision.The residents also organized a peaceful protest in this matter.
