MoS Rai: Govt yet to make a decision on a national NRC

The government informed the Lok Sabha on Tuesday that it had not yet taken any decision to prepare a nationwide National Register of CitizensIn a written response to a question from Congress MP Hibi Eden, Union minister of State for Home Nityanandrai stated that the Citizenship (Amendment) Act, 2019 (CAA) had been notified on December 12, 2019, and was in force on January 10, 2020.

After the rules have been notified under the CAA, the CAA-covered persons may apply for citizenship.According to the Minister, Assam has been informed that the hard copies of the supplementary inclusions list and the online family-wise exclusions list in NRC were published on August 31, 2019, as per the Supreme Courts directions.He also stated that 1,33,83.718 Indian nationals live in foreign countries according to information provided by the Ministry of External Affairs.According to the MEAs information, 1,33,049 Indians renounced Indian citizenship in 2017 and became citizens of other countries.

Similar, 1,34,561 Indians gave up Indian citizenship in 2018, 85,248 for 2020, and 1,11,287 for 2021 as of September 30, 2021.After the announcement by the government that the nationwide NRC would be completed in late 2019 or early 2020, there was a massive protest in many parts of the country.
