New Delhi, Nov 25, : The Ministry of Ayush decided to re-examine Ashwagandha -- Withania somnifera -- leaves used in Ayurveda Siddha, Unani (ASU drugs) by forming an expert group.
It stated that there was no evidence or literature to support the efficacy crude Ashwagandha drug or extract.The Ministry issued an advisory to all ASU Drugs Manufacturers Associations asking for the manufacturers/exporters, sellers, ASU Drug Manufacturing Companies, and ASU drug manufacturers not to use Withania somnifera leaf in any form for therapeutic purposes "No evidence or literature to support the efficacy/benefit of crude drug/extract from Withania somnifera leaf is available.
" "It would be inappropriate to consider the Withania somnifera leaf as ASU medicine at the current stage," the ministry stated in its advisory.After industry intervention, the Ayush Ministry invited stakeholders to discuss their concerns regarding Ashwagandha leaf usage in ASU products.
After a discussion with ASU industry partners the Ministry of Ayush decided to establish an expert group to review the advisory that drug manufacturers received to stop using Ashwagandha leaves.Based on scientific evidence, the group will make recommendations to the Centre regarding the use of Ashwagandha leaves or Panchanga Ashwagandha in ASU Products.avr/pgh #reexamine #advisory #efficacy #Ashwagandha #Delhi.
